Determining
Equivalency under Class Descriptions. Consistent, ongoing training will enhance the bond between you and your dog. Dogs who have a solid obedience education are a joy to live with, they respond well to household routines, have good manners in the presence of people and other dogs, and they fully enjoy the company of the owner who took the time to provide training, intellectual stimulation, and a high quality life. HOT offers the following advanced classes to give you the opportunity to strengthen and reinforce your dog’s basic obedience training so that you can experience the joy and benefits of a well-trained dog. |

Students learn how to teach their puppy to walk politely on a leash, and basic commands such as sit, down, stay, quiet and come. Requirements: Open to handlers of at least 14 years of age and dogs 6 months and older who have completed HOT’s Basic Obedience Class or its equivalent. |
|
The American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizen® (CGC) Program was started in 1989 to reward purebred and mix breed dogs who have good manners at home, in public places and in the presence of other dogs. The AKC’s CGC Program stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. HOT’s CGC Prep Class is designed to prepare you for each of the 10 exercises included in the AKC’s CGC Test, such as politely accepting a stranger, grooming, or the presence of another dog. Your dog will learn to walk politely with you in public, deal with distractions while on your walk, and to sit, down and wait for you to call them. The class concludes with the CGC Test conducted in a relaxed, non-competitive atmosphere. All dogs that complete the class and pass the 10-step CGC test may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club. |
|
|
Rally Classes |
Rally provides a link from the Canine Good Citizen® (CGC) program to obedience or agility competition, both for dogs and handlers. In addition, rally promotes fun and enjoyment for dogs at all levels of competition. |
|
Rally Level 1 $95 – 6 weeks |
Requirements: Open to handlers of at least 14 years of age and dogs 6 months and older who have completed HOT’s Pre-Novice Class or its equivalent. |
| Rally is a sport in
which the dog and handler complete a course of 10 to 20 designated
stations on a course designed by the judge. Each of these stations has a
sign providing instructions regarding the next skill that is to be
performed. The team of dog and handler moves continuously at a brisk, but
normal, pace with the dog under control at the handler's left side. There
should be a sense of teamwork between the dog and handler both during the
numbered exercises and between the exercise signs; however, perfect "heel
position" is not required. Unlimited communication from the handler to
the dog is to be encouraged and not penalized. Unless otherwise specified
in these Regulations, handlers are permitted to talk, praise, encourage,
clap their hands, pat their legs, or use any verbal means of
encouragement. Multiple commands and/or signals using one or both arms and
hands are allowed; the handler's arms need not be maintained in any
particular position at any time, however, the handler may not touch the
dog or make physical corrections.
HOT’s Rally Instructors will spend the first part of each class reviewing select Rally Exercises, demonstrating how they should be executed and explaining how they are scored. The remainder of class time is then devoted to students working on those exercises under the guidance of the instructor. Level 1 focuses on the exercises included in Rally Novice Courses. |
|

All students working in any of the Advanced Training Classes should have a current copy of the A.K.C. Obedience Rules and Regulations, A.K.C. | Tracking Classes | AKC tracking events are the competition form of canine search and rescue. These Tracking events provide training for dogs and their handlers to meet some human needs for tracking and finding lost humans or other animals, as well as, demonstrating the extremely high level of scent capability that dogs possess. |
|
Intro to Tracking $95 – 6 weeks |
Requirements: Open to handlers of at least 14 years of age and dogs 3 months and older who are in suitable physical condition to handle the challenges of this class. |
Competitive tracking is a sport that judges a dog's ability to recognize and follow human scent, a skill that is useful in the service of mankind. We are not training for search and rescue work, man trailing or evidence discrimination, however, the same basic skills learned in this class are utilized to train dogs for those services. Tracking, by nature, is a vigorous, outdoor sport. Tracking tests demonstrate the willingness and enjoyment of the dog in its work, and should always represent the best in sportsmanship and camaraderie by the people involved. HOT’s Tracking Class is designed for those who have never tracked before or who have been out of the sport for a while and are starting a new dog. Students will learn the start, corner, article indication, and line-handling skills necessary to develop the teamwork with their dog needed to build a training regime that, with commitment and consistency, will lead to the successful completion of the AKC Tracking Dog (TD) Test. |
|
| Conformation | Dog shows (conformation events) are intended to evaluate breeding stock. The size of these events ranges from large all-breed shows, with over 3,000 dogs entered, to small local specialty club shows, featuring a specific breed. The dog's conformation (overall appearance and structure), an indication of the dog's ability to produce quality puppies, is judged. |
|
